Exfoliating your skin is an important part of any skin routine because it removes dead skin cells and helps existing cells produce collagen to give your skin a toned and firm appearance. This simple diy sugar scrub contains both nourishing ingredients and fruit acids to make your skin glow. Coconut oil deeply nourishes your skin and keeps it moisturized and protected during the exfoliation process. Honey is a natural antibacterial ingredient, and it’s also loaded with enzymes and gives antioxidant protection to your skin, reducing oxidative stress and fine lines.
I don’t know about you, but when I make a face mask, it’s almost always guaranteed to smell or even taste delicious. I say this because I make face masks out of ingredients I find in my kitchen, so they’re quite edible and this skin brightening DIY sugar scrub is no exception.

A Sugar Scrub That’s Good Enough to Eat
It’s good enough to eat, but is it also good for your skin? Absolutely. Just have a look at the 4 ingredients in this sugar scrub: brown sugar, coconut oil, organic raw honey and fresh lime or lemon juice. These ingredients are all beneficial on their own, but combined, they have an entirely different use.
Now, on to the scrub and its 4 simple yet effective ingredients! Brown sugar, though not exactly hailed in the nutrition world as being the best thing to eat copious amounts of, has some skin benefits due to its molasses content which gives it its brown color. Brown sugar contains calcium iron, potassium and magnesium, which make it healthier than white sugar, but in this scrub, it acts as an exfoliant. (1)
Lime and lemon juice on the other hand are high in polyphenols and vitamin C, which have been shown to have lipid-lowering effects. They also contain water soluble antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body. (2)
Coconut oil has been used as a moisturizer by people living in tropical regions, but studies have shown that it’s actually true, along with reducing inflammation and enhancing the skin barrier function. (3) Lastly, honey is an excellent therapeutic agent for the skin thanks to its antimicrobial properties and its ability to promote tissue repair. (4)
Simply mix all 4 of these ingredients together and scrub gently with your fingers. Rinse with warm water when you’re done!
How Often Can I Use This Brown Sugar Scrub?
I know it can be so tempting to scrub your skin everyday because exfoliating tends to leave the skin feeling soft and smooth, but over-exfoliation is real and could damage your skin.
Oftentimes, when people discover exfoliating agents, they get carried away and use it every time they wash their faces or take showers. However, exfoliating agrents such as this sugar scrub are better and more effective when used only once or twice a week. This ensures that you’re still getting the benefits without damaging the surface of your skin.
Is It Okay to Use White Sugar Instead of Brown Sugar?
Unlike brown sugar which contains minerals, white sugar is bleached and devoid of micronutrients. If you want to provide your skin as many benefits as possible, you’re better off with brown sugar. However, in a pinch, if you find yourself without any brown sugar at all, you could sub in white sugar until you can get your hands on some brown sugar.
Can This Sugar Scrub Help Fade Acne Scars?
When used properly and with the right balance of ingredients, exfoliating with a sugar scrub like this one can help fade acne marks. This skin brightening facial mask brightens the complexion, making it appear softer and smoother. It also helps stimulate collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of acne scars from the inside out.
Are Sugar Scrubs Safe for the Face?
Though I would recommend exfoliating the face as well, do take greater care when scrubbing your face with any exfoliating agent. Even though this scrub is made with all natural ingredients, you don’t want to cause microtears on your face from scrubbing too vigorously. Scrub gently and in small circles, avoiding the eye area completely because of the delicate nature of the skin.
