If you’re a fan of baked beans, then you’re going to absolutely love the recipe that I’ll be sharing today. It makes the best southern style brown sugar instant pot baked beans from scratch. The reason that I say ‘best’ is because of the ridiculously good combination of ingredients that go into making this recipe. The brown sugar mixture also features ketchup, mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika. As if that weren’t enough already, you’ll also be adding in bacon and onion along with the beans and brown sugar mix. This just might be the only baked beans recipe that you’ll ever need, but don’t just take my word for it. Try it and see it for yourself.

Southern Style Brown Sugar Instant Pot Baked Beans from Scratch

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces dried pinto beans, sorted of debris and rinsed
  • 8 ½ cups water
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 8 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp spicy brown mustard
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Add the dried beans, 8 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of salt to the Instant pot.
  2. Close and seal the Instant pot.
  3. Turn the venting knob to SEALING.
  4. Press the PRESSURE COOK button and check to make sure the pressure level shows as “High” on the display.
  5. Adjust the timer to 45 minutes.
  6. When finished cooking, release pressure naturally according to manufacturer’s directions.
  7. Open the lid.
  8. Drain the beans and set aside.
  9. Press the SAUTE button on the Instant Pot and let stand until screen reads “HOT”.
  10. Add the olive oil.
  11. Add the onion and bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, 2 to 3 minutes.
  12. Press the CANCEL button.
  13. Add the ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, brown sugar and ½ cup of water.
  14. Mix to combine.
  15. Add the cooked beans and stir to combine.
  16. Season to taste with salt.
  17. Close and seal the Instant pot.
  18. Turn the venting knob to SEALING.
  19. Press the PRESSURE COOK button and check to make sure the pressure level shows as “High” on the display.
  20. Adjust the timer to 15 minutes.
  21. When finished cooking, release pressure naturally according to manufacturer’s directions.
  22. Open the lid.
  23. Taste and add more salt if needed.
