How to Make Kid-Friendly French Toast That’s Not Packed with Sugar

Fancy some French toast for breakfast this morning? If the thought of sugar-laden toast sounds tempting, think again. Classic French toast with powdered sugar raises your kids blood-glucose levels, providing them with a rush of energy. That’s why they seem so alive and playful when they run out to the school bus.

However, you don’t get to see them 3-hours later when they can barely keep their eyes open at their desks due to the sugar-crash. Our recipe does away with the refined carbohydrate and replaces it with healthy ingredients that taste as good, if not better. Your kids will love this toast smothered with real maple syrup, it’s the perfect way to start their day.

Breakfast for Your Kids – Without the Sugar Rush

For our recipe, we’ll start with a loaf of fresh whole wheat bread. If you have a bakery near where you live, show some support. Small home-style bakeries tend to use less artificial ingredients to extend shelf life than commercial bread manufacturers. (1)

Next, you’ll need 4-large free-range eggs available from your local farmer’s market. When you crack open the egg, you’ll notice the difference between free-range and corn-fed hens. The yolks have a dark, rich orange color – compared to the yellow yolks of corn-fed hens. (2)

Wrap up your ingredients list with a ½-cup of whole raw milk (packed with probiotics), and some grass-fed butter. Grind up a few cinnamon sticks and grab some coconut sugar for the final stage of the recipe. To add some extra nutrition to the French toast, buy some blueberries, and strawberries if they’re in season.

Cut up slices of bread into 3-pieces. In a shallow dish, crack the eggs and add the milk, whisk it all together until frothing. Take a thick-base skillet with a flat cooking surface and place it on medium heat while adding a few spoons of butter to it for the frying. While the butter melts, soak your toast fingers in the batter.

When the bread is soaked through, place it on the skillet and cook till golden brown. A delicious aroma floats through the air as the toast browns and lets everyone in the house know breakfast is minutes away.

In a separate dish, combine the coconut sugar and crushed cinnamon. Smoother the toast in the mix as it comes off the pan, and serve it hot to your family with some berry mix. If you have a bottle of organic maple syrup lying around, it’s the perfect finishing touch.

This dish provides your kids with a serving of protein to keep their muscles and bones healthy. The berries give your kids a dose of antioxidants and plant polyphenols to strengthen their immune system against viral and bacterial infection. (3)
