Homemade Flavored Sugars – Lemon Mint, Blueberry Vanilla and Orange Rum
As soon as Halloween is over and done with, the focus in my attention shifts 100% towards the holiday season. My family goes all out every year too over the holidays. I’m talking decorations up within the first half of November, Christmas music playing on repeat, tons of DIY Christmas crafts with the kids, and my personal favorite, non-stop holiday baking with one of my go-to ingredients: flavored sugars!
Lately, I’ve been trying to mix things up a bit more and have a little fun with my holiday baking. I’ve been making a ton of holiday themed “in a jar” recipes over the last few weeks, but the three recipes that I’m about to share with you guys today are particularly fun for this time of year.
The recipes make three different kinds of flavored sugar:
- Blueberry vanilla sugar
- Orange, rum, and vanilla sugar
- Lemon and mint sugar
Each one of the recipes are pretty easy to prepare as well, so I definitely recommend trying out all three in order to see which one you like the best!
Blueberry Vanilla Sugar
To make the first kind of flavored sugar, you’ll be needing approximately one cup of granulated sugar, along with one vanilla bean (that has been halved and scraped), two teaspoons of freeze dried blueberry powder, and two teaspoons of lemon juice.
You’ll need to combine all of the ingredients together in a bowl before spreading the mixture out over your prepared baking sheet. Let the sugar dry out in the oven for about 30 minutes, stirring it occasionally. Once out of the oven, let the sugar cool off completely, and then use a spoon to break up any clumps.
After the sugar cools off, you can transfer it into a jar to have ready to go for your next baking recipe. Speaking of which, if you find that you absolutely love the flavor of this sugar, then you might be interested in checking out some of these other blueberry vanilla recipes from around the web:

Orange, Rum and Vanilla Sugar
To make the second flavored sugar recipe, you’ll need one cup of brown sugar, one vanilla bean (again, halved and scraped), one teaspoon of orange juice, 1 ½ teaspoons of dark rum, and the finely grated zest from two oranges.
Actually making the sugar is identical to the previous recipe – mix everything together, dry it off for 30 minutes in the oven, break up any clumps with a spoon, and then transfer the sugar into a jar.

Lemon and Mint Sugar
Last but not least is the lemon and mint sugar recipe. For this one, you’ll be needing one cup of granulated sugar, ⅓ cup of minced fresh mint, one teaspoon of lemon juice, and the finely grated zest from two lemons.
And once again, it’s the exact same drill when making this flavored sugar as the last two. This particular recipe is actually my personal favorite of the three, but that’s largely because I just love the combination of lemon and mint. With that in mind, here are some of my very favorite lemon and mint baking recipes from around the web:
