You definitely don’t need to! If you want to make it the traditional way with alcohol though, it’s typically made with brandy (but bourbon and rum work as a tasty substitute as well.

Ingredients
- 6 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- pinch of salt
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup alcohol (brandy, bourbon, rum or whisky) ,optional
For topping:
- ground cinnamon
- whipped cream
Instructions
- Add the egg yolks and sugar to a bowl and whisk until pale and creamy.
- Add the heavy cream, milk, nutmeg and salt to a saucepan.
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Remove from the heat.
- Gradually pour it into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly.
- Pour the mixture back into the saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly for a few minutes until the mixture is just slightly thickened.
- Remove from the heat.
- Stir in the vanilla and alcohol (if using).
- Refrigerate until chilled.
- Just before serving, add the mixture to a blender and blend for a few seconds.
- Pour in glasses.
- Top with whipped cream.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve.
