How to Make Homemade Eggnog


Here’s how to make the most comforting, yummy and nostalgic homemade egg nog (like nana use to make it). It’s such an easy recipe. This is how it’s made (the classic way).


Do You Need to Add Alcohol to Eggnog?

You definitely don’t need to! If you want to make it the traditional way with alcohol though, it’s typically made with brandy (but bourbon and rum work as a tasty substitute as well.

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup alcohol (brandy, bourbon, rum or whisky) ,optional


For topping: 

  • ground cinnamon
  • whipped cream 


  1. Add the egg yolks and sugar to a bowl and whisk until pale and creamy. 
  2. Add the heavy cream, milk, nutmeg and salt to a saucepan. 
  3. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  4. Remove from the heat. 
  5. Gradually pour it into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly.
  6. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan. 
  7. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly for a few minutes until the mixture is just slightly thickened. 
  8. Remove from the heat. 
  9. Stir in the vanilla and alcohol (if using). 
  10. Refrigerate until chilled. 
  11. Just before serving, add the mixture to a blender and blend for a few seconds. 
  12. Pour in glasses. 
  13. Top with whipped cream.
  14. Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve.
